Patek 5136 vs 5140

Feb 09, 2014,10:28 AM

Last year I acquired a 5140G which I enjoy tremendously, probably the best daily wearer I have owned. What I really appreciate is the light weight and how discreet it can be. Not to mention the versatility with the option to alternate straps.

However I recently learned Patek previously produced a model with ref 5136. I tried searching the forum for previous posts but found little. What I mostly would like to understand Is what the differences are in the case of these two references? Are they the same size? I recognize the dial differences and that one is on a metal strap but was mostly curious around the case differences and also differences in how the wear on the wrist.

Also would be keen to hear from anyone who has handled both or owned one and handled the other and have any views on these two. Thanks!

best daily wearer

I agree the 5140 is the best watch to wear everyday. You do not even know it is on and its thin so it misses all the dents and scratches the big case watches get. Cannot answer your question though.

5136G is smaller ...

(36mm) and comes with a bracelet ... and the 5140G is 37.2mm, was introduced in 2006, comes on leather strap and is the successor of 3940. Cheers, Oliver ...

smaller

Thanks Oliver. For some reason I had the impression that the 5136 was 37mm as well. I suppose if it is 36mm it is really closer to being a 3940 on a metal bracelet than to the 5140. Most appreciated.

5136 Information

Two good sources for information would be a search of the data bases / sold lot archives of the 3 major watch auction houses; and as simple as it sounds (but often quite effective) a Google search. Search both ways for : "Patek 5136" and I am sure many th...

Some differences indeed.

The 5136 is 3940 with a metal bracelet and larger month and day letters. To accomodate the bracelet, the case may be a bit thicker but still 36 mm diameter though. The 5140 is the 37 mm cousin of 5136 with a larger date dial. Unfortunately, after wearing ...

small thicker

Thanks for the feedback. I did some further searching online and now believe the 5136 does have a 36mm case diameter (thanks to Oliver for pointing this out). Interesting that most descriptions have it at 37mm which is what lead me to believe it was more ...

And there are some subtle differences: 1. The 5136 is slightly larger at 37mm and the bezel is convex whereas the 3940's bezel is concave. The 5140's bezel is convex as well, so in that sense the 5136 is "closer" to the 5140. 2. The size of the fonts for ...

I was fortunate!

that on Saturday when I popped into the Patek salon in London (25 March 2017), I saw the discontinued 5136G which looked absolutely perfect. I am not one who likes watches on bracelets but the watch hugged my small wrist perfectly as if it was made specia...

I think it looks beautiful too

of course the bracelet still looks different from today's trend (shiny) but it looks indeed very appealing. I think it is because its matches perfectly the watch itself. It was 36mm indeed. Thanks for bringing some additional details, it can be a good alt...

Thanks Mark!

I agree that the 5940G is the more elegant watch and probably more practical in that it is lighter and slimmer too. In addition, I believe the 5940G will hold its value better especially it was only produced for two years. But the perfect fit of the 5136P...

A wrist shot

taken two days ago. Notice the perfect fit! As a fellow purist I was with, John, commented, he had never seen a watch fit so well on a wrist!! ...

Thanks Keks!

The only problem is that I bought one of these 4 months ago!! ...

Thank you!

But if you had to choose only one, which one would it be?!

That would be a hard choice...!

 By: keks : March 28th, 2017-00:54
Assuming I did not own either and faced with these options I would go for a 5136. But mostly as it suits my lifestyle and collection more, it is somewhat sportier and a touch more casual in my mind. I also do not mind this bracelet contrary to many others...

Thanks again!

Yes I intend to hold on to the 5940G not just because of its elegance, thin case but also it was only produced over a two year period which is pretty short by Patek standards. I as fortunate that mine was the last one produced according to Patek You see I...

The idea.....

is to build up what in my mind would be the perfect collection that is rare, beautiful (dial, case, lugs and movement!), wearable and accurate! I am using Patek as the base for my tiny collection and perhaps a Grönefeld Remontoire into the mix

For me the 5136 1/G is perhaps the ultimate combination of sporty, casual, understated, Grand Complication elegance! A bit of a mouthful, but

I think it is a perfect watch to wear for any occasion from jeans to tux - beautiful, comfortable and complicated. Tried it on many times. Tried to buy one - didn't work out, but perhaps I will in the future. Best, Patekova

I agree in many ways

At the time i originally started this thread I already owned a 5140G so could not justify making room for a 5136.... now I dont have a 5140 any longer but have a 5960/1A so adding a 5136 would not work... again... everything happens for a reason and can\'...

Hmmmm.......

 By: sham1 : March 29th, 2017-05:56
I know the 5960/1A and the 5136G both have that same metal bracelet look but not only do they have different movements but the dial is vastly different and one is 4.5mm larger than the other. So I think you could quite easily own both! Owning two perpetua...

I absolutely agree

If I did not already own a 5940G, the 5136G would definitely be a serious consideration. Knowing me I will probably pop by at the London salon again to have another try of the watch
