59601/A or Daytona?

Dec 03, 2016,12:07 PM

Maybe an unfair comparision, but still...

I'm not a very big fan of steel or sports watches, but after a recent hollyday it became clear to me that I need one. Wearing precious metals in rough environments is nerve wrecking...

So, 5960 or Daytona?

Price wise, the 5960 can be had for huge discounts, and the Daytona for huge premiums. So the difference is actually not that large. But the cheaper the price, the more can be put into the next Lange.

The 5960 is growing on me. I have tried it a few times. I have not tried the Daytona, but it looks fabolous in pictures.

WARNING

If you keep on mentioning words such as "price", this forum -as well as the entire internet- will explode. I will have you banned if you do it again!

Yes, ouch.. I forgot.

No more money talk...

No, no problem

By: Mark in Paris : December 3rd, 2016-17:52
We don't talk about value and rebates (more subjective, debates on the relationship people have etc...) but we can mention comparative budgets, no problem, that's even better to understand what people want and give better opinions Cheers, Mark

Money

As you know we have strict rules and the bare mentioning of "money", "budget" and the like will destroy the spirit of this forum. I suggest to have this thread removed altogether. If the thread opener is concerned about "money" he/she should post somewher...

why? money is *very important* in comparing a purchase. It takes

 By: christianch : December 4th, 2016-06:43
nothing away from the spirit of the forum so I suggest that you post somewhere else.

Not the only Moderator who is fine with it......

 By: Baron - Mr Red : December 6th, 2016-10:56
.....i think Thomahof's post is perfectly acceptable. There is absolutely no issue of banning in this case. In fact, I think he makes a very valid point....and in keeping with the spirit of the forum. Good manners .... as if you were at a cocktail party.....

totally agree with you.....and those comments have no place on this forum....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : December 6th, 2016-10:57
.....the posters comments on price comparison are completely acceptable.

very unfriendly tone that is much more..

 By: christianch : December 4th, 2016-06:44
dangerous than mentioning the vague idea of pricing comparison. He didn't post numbers and the moderator is fine with it so..move on and try to be cordial.

My opinion

 By: radone : December 3rd, 2016-12:42
5960 is never really going to be a sports watch. With its 3 bar water resistence, you cannot even afford to take a shower with it. Besides, it cannot be compared to the Daytona in terms of robustness. It is you that can decide how sporty you need it to be...

Agree here.

 By: willski : December 3rd, 2016-13:35
I personally prefer the 5960 but it is definitely not a sports watch. The 116500 is absolutely a sports watch and will have that Rolex durability. I saw pick up the 5960 and get a Tudor Black Bay for those days you need something nice yet rugged without b...

Solid advice!!

 By: Thomahof : December 3rd, 2016-13:45
I also have a Quartz Tag Heuer for that - but I guess the watchprosite police would have me arrested for that. I have not looked closely into Tudor before, but that one was really nice!

If the final choice is just between these both watches, I would personally opt for the PP

 By: Alkiro1 : December 3rd, 2016-12:47
Let us know what would be your final choice. Best wishes Alkiro

Strong words, Nicolas!

 By: Thomahof : December 3rd, 2016-13:37
Also, 3 bars is good enough for me. I deal with greens and fairways. Unless Im very out of bounds, I should be ok. It takes something to get used to the 5960, but it might become an absolute classic! But that Daytona is an absolute no-brainer or what?? I\...

An interesting dilemma

 By: Gus7 : December 4th, 2016-03:35
I well recall you saying just that Nicolas when here in HK. I still have a soft spot for the 1A but I'm not sure I see it as a sports watch in quite the same way as the Daytona.

uhm...i think that is the 5070 [nt]

Hard to say but

 By: Thy1r : December 3rd, 2016-15:49
If this can help : I m not a Rolex fan and don\'t own any except a silly diamond bezel one. I own a 5960/1a and it\'s one of my favourite PP I tried this black bezel/white dial new Dayto (I don\'t even now it\'s ref or name) but I really liked it. Maybe t...

Unfair comparison...

 By: WWK : December 3rd, 2016-15:52
you said it yourself. I have a black dial steel Daytona and a 5960P-016 myself. PP is in a complete different league than Rolex, shouldn't be talked about together. Rolex is not that great of a watch really, mass produced just clever marketing. Price also...

Well this is an interesting project :)

By: Mark in Paris : December 3rd, 2016-18:28
I like both watches and totally understand your will to get a steel watch for some activities. The 5960 and even I think the Daytona may not appreciate shocks like playing golf on the long run though. The thing is that it is horologically 2 very different...

5960 +++

 By: Mr Glass : December 4th, 2016-01:17
At the moment - 5960/1A top of my wish list (Lord Christmas are you monitoring this thread?) and would win against any watch. It\'s this forums fault with all the amazing posts of it - was not such a big fan before seeing actual wrist shots.

So I will torment you

 By: Thomahof : December 4th, 2016-01:22
..with one more wrist shot! ...

Lovely. [nt]

I will add you to the list of tormentors (they know who they are )

The first time I tried the 5960a

 By: Thomahof : December 4th, 2016-02:40
I was put off by the date frames, which I somehow thought was plastic, or at least looked plastic-ish. Now I have learned that they are in fact blackened white gold, and that this process is also used on some of the grand complications. Now that is someth...

Wear the 5960 at least once a month

 By: Thy1r : December 4th, 2016-02:54
...

The Daytona...is a myth and with patience you can get it...

 By: christianch : December 4th, 2016-06:45
very versatile and nicer in my opinion.

Do you need a chrono?

 By: rcg412 : December 4th, 2016-15:04
I have the blnr gmt master 2 and love it. To be clear. I am not a Rolex guy, but when I'm basically not at work or going out I'm generally rough on watches and I'd be afraid the Patek couldn't hold up... just not what it's made for imo. If you wanted to g...

Go for the PP

 By: jwd : December 4th, 2016-20:28
I've had the 5960/1A for the last 6 months and absolutely love it, so I'm biased here. The case, bracelet, dial...all epic. Some are put off by the date windows, but I really don't notice it in use. Great watch and very comfortable as a daily wearer. Go f...

Glad you enjoy it so much :)

By: Mark in Paris : December 5th, 2016-07:14
and thanks for sharing your experience, very helpful for new owners. About your golf question, I didn't have the perfect answer but from my readings over the years, the vibrations are quite significant (more than the G issue). I've been wearing my Zenith ...

They don't really belong in the same conversation....

 By: watchme : December 5th, 2016-06:34
A chronograph that - up until 1988 - you couldn't GIVE AWAY, that has NO DATE, versus a flyback chronograph with an ANNUAL CALANDAR. I wouldn't decide between these. The Daytona is a very popular model, and MANY of them will be produced. Patek's total pro...

For me, it would have to be the 5960.

 By: masterspiece : December 7th, 2016-00:37
The differences are so vast that to pit it against each other is a mismatch. However, the Steel Daytona at this point is elusive and very hard to get. Other than price, what are the pros and cons that you can live with because that is what it will come do...

Daytona

 By: gary01 : December 9th, 2016-05:44
forgetting value/investment, on pure aesthetics, for me it's Daytona. To my eye, 5960 a Patel mistake - too busy and for me too blingy, esp with the ss bracelet. No offense intended to the many purists who love it! Daytona in steel - far more classic. Not...

On pure esthetics..

 By: Thomahof : December 9th, 2016-08:12
I think I can agree with you.

U said it yourself, an unfair comparison.

 By: CaptainCrunch : December 9th, 2016-06:01
5960 is a beautiful watch with usable annual calendar on top of the chrono feature. The only thing I dislike is band, which is something a new bracelet/band can easily fix.

The moore I look at it..

 By: Thomahof : December 9th, 2016-08:15
The more I appreciate the bracelet. Although at first I thought it was hideous! The patek Newman. Who can resist that description!? Nicolas has a way of getting into my head. Same with the "travel in your mind" thing.

Seems to me your mind is set. Please post some

Pics after you have secured the purchase. Enjoy it in the best of times. Have a great weekend

Why do you impose yourself to choose?

 By: Thy1r : December 13th, 2016-23:48
Get both ;-) Sorry for this bad advice. Let me explain my POV Anectode : Had lunch yesterday with 4 guys. All of them had the new Dayto , white dial ! (Hopefully they have all very good tastes because they loved my 5905p black dial ;-) ) My father has it ...
