A speedy in the collection

Morning all,

I am trying to set the building blocks for a long-term watch collection. Something that will keep my active in retirement when it comes!!

So far I have a 8 day manual Panerai and a Rolex Daytona. I would like to add a Speedmaster to this collection - Omega is a brand I have followed from afar, so would be really interested in asking the forum which speedy I should be looking to purchase. My purchases tend to be new / nearly new, rather than vintage.

My own leaning is towards the basic speedmaster professional - but see that there are two models - an open and closed caseback.

As I build a collection it is with the intention of wearing the watches.

Really interested in thoughts and views.

Speedmaster Professional. Everyone, except the extreme Purists, must have one. Later, you can get the re editions and the 9300 ones. Cheers, Nilo

You can't beat.....

Some ten years ago it was $800....

for a used one, a few years later $1500 now is more than twice more, But I can't deny it is a top piece and a desirable one. Best Regards JohnC, Edward.

There are so many Speedy's to choose from, but I can't think of any better start than the classic Professional ...

Open or closed caseback are personal preference but I'd highly recommend the more traditional option of hesalite crystal ...

Consider the "sapphire sandwich."

Love mine. Classic Speedy but with sapphire crystal (robust, hard to scratch) and display back (showing the beautiful 1863 movement which is finished to a higher standard than the regular one with 1861 movement because of the display back). Great modern S...

Thanks for all the advice

Great to hear all your views - thank you. Took the opportunity to try on a Speedmaster Professional (05) in an AD over the weekend. Really liked the watch - from my limited knowledge of Speedys it does seem a faithful reproduction of the 57 model. Liked t...
