Only watch contest: I am out. Time to give the Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter some rest.

Jul 02, 2017,08:27 AM

And to enjoy some of my other watches.

5 months! 5 months wearing the same watch was a real pleasure. An unknown pleasure till now, since I never wore the same watch for so long.

When I bought my 1858 Tachymeter, I wore it for 5 weeks, which was something very special to me, but I just couldn't take it off.

This watch won my heart. The feeling to own something very special. A fine, one of the finest manual winding modern chronograph.

Let's face it, for this level of price I don't know any other chronograph which can compete. Even more expensive chronographs have a tough game to play against this Montblanc.

The dial is another reason to fall in love with this watch.

The case is less subtle or refined than some other Montblanc Villeret 13.21 or 16.29, or than other chronographs from other brands, but still... Its presence, its character, its charm and its inner beauty make all.

What happened during these last 5 months?

A lot of work, a few moments of relax and (p)leasure, a lot of things to deal with.

Not a lot of time to think about what watch to wear, to go to the safe and to change my watch. Yet, a watch which crossed all these moments, good or bad, without disappointing. By far!

I had just one question to think about: what watch will I choose for the contest?

I had the choice between several competitors, such as the Rolex GMT MASTER 6542, a Tudor 7924, a JLC Master Minute Repeater, a JLC Tribute to Deep Sea Alarm ( or Vintage ), the Ulysse Nardin Sonata, A Blancpain Fifty Fathoms ( vintage ), a Patek 5110P or 5070G.... All are great choices, I know all of them very well because they all had a lot of wrist time.

Still, the Montblanc 1858 Tachymeter... I felt it was the one to try to wear for a very long time.

I remembered that, when I just got it and that I wore it for 5 weeks, I quickly felt the need to wear it again after two of three weeks. I was surprised by this feeling, and I wore it again, for two or three weeks, without any rotation.

Wearing a watch for so long is the only way to better understand and know it.

I didn't need to be sure that it was one of my best purchase from these last years. I just had the confirmation that it is.

I dream of the day I will be able to take a family picture of the finest modern chronographs ever made. The 1858 Tachymeter will be part of them, for sure, along with the Jaeger Lecoultre Duometre, the Lange Datograph, and the Patek 5370 Rattrapante.

But for the moment, I am enjoying it a great deal.

A last word, about its reliability. I know that some of us faced some issues with their 1858 Tachymeter, which is as sad as it is unacceptable.

With mine, I faced zero issues, and I monitored it to be sure of its accuracy. 5 seconds per day, too fast. Which is very satisfactory, from my point of view.

My watches are used at work or out of working days, so it'd better be accurate. It is one of the most important thing I am expecting from a watch, as I have not being punctual.

The 1858 Tachymeter is not disappointing at all.

And when you look at this:

You can only be happy.

And you can understand why it lasted for so long stuck on my wrist.

Best,

Nicolas

...so it is surely not all about the Watch only ; I must be weak, and you must be strong ! LOL Congrats Nico but I think you take the right decision to now give it a rest and bring your other beauties back to life ! They also deserve some wrist time ! Bes...

Considering the array of alternative choices that this 1858 has beaten ... that is surely a statement!

Welcome back!

It is certainly time for those other great pieces to see the light of day. 5 months, though. Quite an achievement, no matter how much one loves a watch.

Well done Nicolas!

I have kept the 7200R on my wrist with minimal competition from my one or two watch collection. You on the other hand have resisted the temptation to give any wrist time to your other beauties (especially the 5110P!!) for most of this year. I salute you

A pity you left, but thank you for staying within the circle for so long!

But on the other hand I am happy for you that you can fully enjoy your rich choice of alternatives again. Now that you left I would not be surprised to see the remaining four to call it quits too. And thanks for sharing your impressions of and your enthus...

The Chronometer is calling for me, I can hear it clearly.

But it will wait patiently for the right occasion. Not an everyday watch in my small stable.

Amen to that!

I looked forward to this post from you, as we know you had serious contenders to choose from. Bravo for selecting the Montblanc. I'm in the fence about what to do with mine. Due back the end of July. First, I must confirm all is in proper order. Sad I am ...

Curious as to what's next on your wrist.

I agree with everything you have written about the 1858. Thanks for illuminating this piece for all of us.

Merci, dear HS. [nt]

Wonderful summary, Nico!

Really love your pictures and have to say I bow before your determination to stick with one watch for five months - must be special indeed that you managed it And something tells me we will continue to see it often, even if you will not be wearing it ever...

But if it was stuck on your wrist for five months, when will you get to enjoy the movement view??

 By: skyeriding : July 3rd, 2017-05:49
I jest of course. Sheer dedication there! The 5070 seems like a nice alternative as a "refresher" Regards, skyeriding

Thank you for the report and it is great to read about the love for the 1858

NOTE Next year the watch worn this year is not allowed to enter The Contest. 😉

Great post review. I wonder if the P15 would equally give the same sort of feeling...

If it can even stay on your wrist for 5 months... Best, Echi

this one grows on me.. to buy or not to buy
