JLC Deep Sea Chrono

Nov 30, 2016,17:59 PM

So after owning this watch for a few weeks (my first JLC) I can honestly say this....

JLC is just ok when compared to other brands I owned.
The rotor on this watch is very loud, it is very audible when moving your wrist.
The lume on this particular model is horrible to say the least. The dial lume is very week even when using an iphone to directly charge it. If anyone has owned any seiko diver or panerai luminor models, you will understand where I am coming from on a watch that retails for 10,800.
The part that drives me insane is that I cannot grab the crown.
The design is such that unless you have very long finger nails, you cannot pull the crown out. Since the crown is not screwed down and does not pop out, it makes this a big pain to tinker with. The other part that annoys me even more is when setting the time and pushing in the crown, it moves the minute hand. It takes a few tries to sync the time and push in the crown so it does not move the minute hand off the hour marker.
I like the looks of this piece but do not see myself owning it in the long haul. Too many things that annoy me and none of this was apparent at the AD. Does anyone else have this model and feel the same way about the things I mentioned?

In a crowded field, there's no room for disappointment

Sorry to hear your impressions are less than stellar. There's a lot of competition for similar designs at this price point. Thank you for your frank and honest thoughts on this piece.

Just not ready to take a loss yet

I will wear this watch in my rotation for a while as I am not ready to take a huge loss. I wonder if I am the only owner of this model that sees these things. Its very hard when I have owned different models across different brands and JLC being so highly...

I saw your post on WUS talking about the same issues...

Re: the strap, you might want to check out this review, it talks about how the watch/strap performs in the water: https: I'd also suggest that you email the JLC concierge and get the official word on the strap. In my experience they are very knowledgeable...

Not really issues

 By: ripper444 : December 1st, 2016-07:19
I contacted JLC to find out. They told me the strap has a coating and you swim in it. I also read a ton of reviews that I found. These are all my observations. I didn't really mess with the crown too much at the AD so I had no way of knowing. These are al...

Yes, these are the things that you often discover once you own the product

 By: logan2z : December 1st, 2016-15:30
I had a similar experience with the Omega Speedmaster. Small crown, close to the case. I find it a bit difficult to pull out the crown and wind the watch. A bit more annoying since it's a manual wind But you find ways to work around these little things if...

Yes

With my speedmaster I also noticed it but on this particular watch I simply cant grab it.

The rotor has ceramic ball bearing, which explain the noise.

As for the crown, two things. I didn't have issues pulling it, but yes, I noticed that the minute hand could move, when pushing the crown. This is not the only JLC which does that. Amvox II, and even the Reverso Septantième. As for the Lume, it should be ...

Some years ago, I asked JLC to check that point, and they told me that it was...

Normal with the Cal 75x.... Best, Nicolas

I cannot give you my feeling about this specific JLC as I never owned one.

 By: Alkiro1 : December 1st, 2016-00:08
But regarding the move of the minute hand when you push your crown, I have the same "problem" with my Royal Oak Fondation 15100ST. The AP 2225 caliber in this watch is based on the JLC 889. So I suppose it is a JLC specific "problem" as all my other watch...

Can't really comment on the watch itself but the issue with setting time

 By: crown comfort : December 1st, 2016-00:16
is seen elsewhere too, that the minute jumps a bit after pushing the crown back in. One trick that works often: When you set the time, move the minute hand past the time you want to set, then move it backwards to the exact time and then push the crown in....

Will try

 By: ripper444 : December 1st, 2016-07:24
I will give this a try. None of these things I mentions are "problems" they are just things I noticed after owning the watch. The reason i never had these things before is all my watches have screw down crowns and pop out. Tudor and Rolex both disengage t...

The crown on my TT Geophysic 1958

 By: reintitan : December 1st, 2016-19:11
is a pain to pull out to set the time unless I have long nails. The rotor of the cal. 898/1 in the TT Geophysic 1958 is very noisy as well due to the ceramic ball bearings which probably are used in your watch's movement, too. These are JLC "features"

Yea

 By: ripper444 : December 1st, 2016-20:28
It's a good brand per se but some of these details are just mind boggling. I'm guessing they are ceramic ball bearings but I don't see how they make anything better. People always say Rolex is this and that but from personal experience they do everything ...

Most of the posts from owners I've read said that the lume was 'underwhelming'

 By: logan2z : December 1st, 2016-21:49
I also read that the lume is 'adequate but no Seiko diver'. It seems like Hodinkee had a different opinion, although they seem to be in the minority.

Accuracy

 By: ripper444 : December 2nd, 2016-08:09
Hodinkee faked that lume shot or they said it was a pre release model and maybe JLC went cheap with the lume after. The good news is my watch is very accurate. Since Rolex updated their specs to be +2/-2 a day this JLC is within that range.

The ceramic ball bearings supposedly don't require lubrication and

wear out slower than the traditional steel bearings.

That's it. [nt]

Sorry to hear, but try this

 By: Ambos : December 2nd, 2016-08:34
Have you tried to grab the crown \'horizontally\', i.e. on same level as the crown and pushers? This works on my TTDS Alarm. Regarding the setting: I have the sibling calibers in my AMVOX 2 & 7. Once you set the minute hand and then move the crown a tiny ...

stubby fingers!

 By: ripper444 : December 2nd, 2016-16:33
Ya I have and cant get it. I will try these tips next time I set the watch. For now I really am enjoying wearing it, been running the chrono all day, hopefully not wearing the parts.

Well that was a short time of ownership

I got fed up with not being able to pull the crown out and set the time and sold the watch! Maybe in the future I wil consider JLC again but I was not blown away by their quality.

I was

considering the Master Chrono but after reading this I will pass.

Good watches but

They are good watches but you need to check them out before hand. I like Rolex quality and robustness much better. They have worked out the day to day kinks.
