Don't meet your heros.

Hi All

I have several watches by Jaeger LeCoultre and Rolex. My favourite has to be my JLC Master 8 Days Perpetual pictured.

I recently acquired what I thought would be my grail watch. A Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R. It's a beautiful watch. However, I've always been lead to believe that Patek is leaps and bounds ahead of other watch manufacturers in terms of prestige, finish, workmanship and accuracy. I've been playing with and comparing the movements in all my display case back watches and I have to say whilst my Patek looks amazing on my wrist, my JLCs offer the same or better finish for less money.

This is just my opinion of course and I'm not a watchmaker, just a guy who really appreciates quality watches.

I appreciate there's more to a watch than it's movement but I'd love to hear from watchmakers who have serviced multiple brands, what their experience is in terms of the quality of materials used, durability, reliability, and workmanship.

Case and dial, I would agree, depending on the model.

Certainly your JLC perpetual has as nicely finished a case and dial as the Nautilus; but I still think Patek's movement finishing when comparing those two models is better: better anglage and more handcraft IMO. But value for the money, it is hard to beat...

For the same money...

I think a JLC Duometre is quite a bit better finished than the 5167R. -Dean

Agreed. I was comparing only the two models presented.

And I would absolutely choose a Duometre over the 5167 or any Aquanaut.

I am sure it is. ;) [nt]

I prefer it in rose gold but when I tried it, it was too big for my flat 7" wrist. Which is your favourite model? I like the enamel dial model but I\'ve never seen one in the flesh. I wasn\'t too keen on the model with the open dial.

Absolutely. JLC seem to vary their finish across their range to suit.

The duometre gleams.

Patek vs JLC

Patek\'s finishing IS better but JLC makes some funky watches--the eight day perpetual included--that Patek would never make. Double barrel, two power reserve indicators. What\'s not to like? JLC through and through.

Vacheron Constantin better Quality and finish.

Vacheron Constantin better Quality and finish than patek although the latter keeps high resale value .But,look at the heritage and finishing of Vacheron Constantin and you will see that no watch manufacturer can beat Vacheron Constantin Superior Quality a...

I looked at the Overseas on a rubber strap.

When looking for a rubber strap watch. I spent a long time in the shop looking at this watch and if I\'m honest I was underwhelmed. I cannot comment on the movement because it has a closed case back. Thanks for mentioning Vacheron, I\'ll include them more...
