Question for the group

Since questions like this fall on deaf ears with my wife and most of my friend, I’ll ask you - what have you done when the unicorn piece you were not expecting appears but it will bust the bank and “disrupt” the collection a bit?

I’ve started a collection. It’s intentional, curated, and deliberate:
  • 42mm +/- 2mm (just fits my wrist and I can typically see the dial)
  • From a living/modern independent watchmaker
  • Where I know/believe the watchmaker themself spent some bench time with the piece (so while I like the design of FP Journe, it’s unlikely he actually spent any time on the watch I’d buy, while I can believe that Paul Gerber, The McGonigle Brother, Thomas Prescher, Lang and Heyne, Habring, early PSM, Vianny, etc. have)
  • I’m looking to go “wide” rather than “deep” - to have a great example from as many independents as I can versus a bunch from one.
  • The complications I most like are “time” related like date, calendar, etc. over technical like tourbillon (partly because I can’t afford most tourbillon)
  • I not as wealthy as I need to be for this endeavor
So I’ve got a few pieces, a few more ready to order, and one ordered on it’s way.

Then, a rare and seminal piece from one of the independents that I already own becomes available. And, it’s a perpetual calendar.

The costs will delay a couple other pieces I’m ready to move on by quite awhile, and it’s another from someone I already have in the collection.

What to do, what to do?

Do I:
  • slow the diversity and range of the collection and buy it, or
  • stay the course and add 2 or 3 others from independents I do not yet have?
I know the “buy what you love” advise, but what have you done in this situation?

Thanks!

Do you think you will be happy?

As long as you will cherish the watch and not regret (the money spent and watches sold / foregone).

Catch the unicorn!

Seems like a common problem we collectors face everyday. If I were in your shoes, I would ask myself 2 questions. Do I like the unicorn piece more than the other one in my collection of the same brand? If yes, sell the one in my collection and upgrade to ...

Totally agree with you David 👍🏻

This seems to be a non often seen piece and so assuming everything makes sense in terms of price, condition etc then go for it. You mention one hesitation being that you already have a piece from this watchmaker, and your intention is to wide not deep, so...

You should get it.

then ride away with it!! If the others are still available regular pieces, they can wait for that delay whereas the unicorn piece will not. Cheers and we want to see pictures!!! Andrew
