[SIHH 2017] New Voutilainen Vingt-8 "ISO"

Jan 15, 2017,11:25 AM

The watchmaker has just unveiled a new and original complication in his Vingt-8 model.

You can see on the picture below that there is a mobile minute ring. The ring will move at the same speed than the hour hand. Hence, the minute hand will have to adapt its pace to show the right time.

Here is what Kari Voutilainen says:

"The watch bears an original display of hours and minutes. At the top of each hour, the minute hand overlaps the hour hand, regardless of the time. On every half hour, the minute and hours hands are opposite. The circle of minutes turns at the same rate as the hour hand for easy reading. The angle between the hour hand and the minute hand remains the same regardless of the time. The position of the hour and minute hands, with respect to the other is always the same according to the minutes, whatever the hour is."

A very clever other way of displaying time. And what is surprising is that it still looks very legible that way.

Best, Mark

Am I reading this correct? So the outer minute ring moves counterclockwise

 By: AnthonyTsai : January 15th, 2017-12:08
and you just read the minutes from the 12 o'clock position of the minute ring? - AT

The outer ring moves clockwise at the same speed as the hour hand

 By: iadxb : January 15th, 2017-12:21
While the minute hand is adjusted to move 8.33% faster than normal so in one hour it rotates 390° and catches up to the hour hand. A curious way to display time, perhaps, but not quite a 'complication' in any sense of the word...

Exactly [nt]

 By: iadxb : January 15th, 2017-12:37

Yes indeed [nt]

By: Mark in Paris : January 15th, 2017-16:03

If the minute ring follows the hour hand, then it has to be clock wise

By: Mark in Paris : January 15th, 2017-16:02
hence, the "60" will remain on the hour hand side. But I'll wait for more explanations maybe from someone who will be able to meet KV.

Ah…the minutes ring is slaved to the hour hand, so the 60 minute mark is always at the tip of it.

 By: anonymous09 : January 15th, 2017-16:44
The clockwise explanation makes more sense now, with that being the case. Still think it’s a daft thing to do on a conventional layout, just to be different. If you’re aiming for different, then Urwerk, MCT, and Pierre DeRoche have covered that base. Undo...

yes, that's how I understand it works too

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:19
When talking about what's different I would say there will never be enough to me as each try is always a good thing and we never know what it can bring and who it will appeal to. Best, Mark

Strange complication. Is it really a fit in the historical..

 By: Ronald Held : January 15th, 2017-13:17
KV watch designs??

Surprising indeed

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:20
Just a kind of sense of curiosity from KV I guess, in such a classical field.

That's my thoughts

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:21
I wonder if after a while, it may become even more easy or interesting reading time with such display? We'll see when people can try it! Best, Mark

I agree, while keeping its simpler 3 hander look.

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-10:54
I had a look at its collections' page (present and past) and I must say that it is huge for such a small watchmaker. Here: www.voutilainen.ch #* Thus I can understand that such brand can't bring something totally new each year. This is a nice way ...

And I think that competition (even for independent brands) is hard today so you must constantly remain active and offer novelties

 By: Alkiro1 : January 16th, 2017-22:23
Even if it\'s not the case here, it can leads you to do mistake sometimes IMHO. Best wishes Alkiro

What a weird idea!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : January 15th, 2017-14:15
But, one that probably is very natural after a short time. The problem is likely switching between this and normal watches, there will be an adjustment period each way. As a main watch, though, this could be very nice.

Exactly

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:22
Not very natural but who knows how well will it work for the wearer? Maybe good, who knows You're right, switching between watches would not be that easy though. Best, Mark

It is unique but it seems like the answer to a question nobody asked.

 By: mpg13 : January 15th, 2017-14:27
I don't know about a complication that requires an explanation from a psychologist. ;-) Best, Martin

+1 Well said. [nt]

 By: JToddH : January 15th, 2017-14:45

+1...I don't "get" this one

 By: vitalsigns : January 15th, 2017-16:52
I like alternate time displays, but this one doesn\'t work for me.

Quirky and certainly very individual without being obvious, I like it

 By: Poky : January 15th, 2017-15:17
For sure the person standing next to you looking over will be puzzled when you tell him the time.

You're right Poky

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:27
We'll see what will be the feedback of people who can try it, it might be interesting! Best, Mark

Very interesting.

 By: JerryW : January 15th, 2017-15:20
It does make sense. Probably take a few hours to acclimate to the movement. Others who see it would think you have the wrong time, great conversation piece.

I agree :) [nt]

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:23

Agreed.

 By: willski : January 15th, 2017-17:35
This KV sings at a much lower level than his other pieces to me...

That's a question

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:25
As I wrote above, maybe the wearer will be surpised to feel it is even easier reading than the standard manner? Or just a way to express curiosity from the watchmaker. Time will tell Kari! Best, Mark

Let's see.

 By: dr.kol : January 16th, 2017-10:08
I am never really impressed about new inventions which do no add value in any ways. Best, Kari

Lovely movement of course from Kari

 By: alphabeta81 : January 15th, 2017-22:32
But this makes no sense to me. Doesn\'t feel special, the only word that comes to mind is "confusing" to be honest

I think that a part of the people looking for Indies

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:29
are also looking for something unusual. We see among the indpendent watchmaking a lot of very original displays. Maybe that this manner to tell time will appeal to some and that the experience wearing it is better than we think? We'll see. Best, Mark

I agree but as we say in stock market investing

 By: alphabeta81 : January 16th, 2017-15:35
Contrarian for the sake of being contrarian has little value. Different just to be different to me is similar. I am a huge Kari fan but this to me is a rare miss where he is trying too hard.

I don't know about the way time is indicated, that I have to try IRL.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : January 16th, 2017-00:24
But I absolutely love the color scheme on the white dial version shown.

I like it too Zabreg

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:31
It is very pure with a little touch of modernity. A bit like yours, with a light main color and touches of blue and red. Best, Mark

Had to keep from posting till SIHH

 By: Patekphilippecollector : January 16th, 2017-07:57
Hope the video works but if not it\'s in my instagram where you can see it work ...

I can imagine that Karl!

By: Mark in Paris : January 16th, 2017-09:34
Thanks for sharing. Being informed and respecting the date is tough indeed as one thing we like is sharing and discussing with watch communities. Thanks for waiting until now for sharing it and respecting that! Best, Mark

Thank you Mark in Paris

 By: ztirual : January 16th, 2017-12:27
In a word. Awsome. I saw the blue dialed one in Môtiers early last November and I fell completely under the charm of this watch. The dial needs to be seen with the lettering under the glazing of the enamel playing hide and seek- Very subtle. But of course...

Great reading your feedback Z'

By: Mark in Paris : January 18th, 2017-07:14
I can imagine how nice the dial is (I didn't notice it was enamal). I totally agree with what your wrote. We all have the specific angle we look at watchmaking, what we appreciate in those micro mechanics. It is not always about usefulness, legibility, wa...

This is amazing

By: Truth About Watchmaking : January 21st, 2017-02:11
The minute hand will be aligned with the hours hand for each full hour. So, the rotation speed of the minute hand is 65 mn per hour. I'll let you do the math for the disk You're gonna be wrong at reading the time in the first place, because we are so used...

Agree

 By: bmwmw : January 21st, 2017-04:43
I commissioned an ISO from Kari last year and am collecting it soon. I actually think this display, with the hour and minute hands lining up on the hour each hour, is more intuitive than the traditional display we are all used to. I also like the idea of ...

Great choice!

By: Mark in Paris : January 22nd, 2017-07:14
With such a watch your wishes will be fulfilled. We're looking forward to see that we you get it! Best, Mark

Thank you for sharing your opinion of this

By: Mark in Paris : January 22nd, 2017-07:13
Not the usual stuff but a great watch nonetheless.

Very original, and beautiful

 By: wootwoot : January 21st, 2017-17:24
I love it and more than that love the way Kari confounds the establishment. My kind of watch, my kind of watchmaker.

These KV dials are indeed something

By: Mark in Paris : January 29th, 2017-06:15
we enjoy so much more in the metal because of how they are made. You'll tell us! Best, Mark

I am a fan of quirky ways to read the time, but in this case...

 By: amanico : January 28th, 2017-04:36
I don't know. I guess I have to try to see it in the real, and to try to figure out how it works. And if this original way of reading is so interesting. Works in progress before any final judgement. Best, nicolas

That's all the question Nicolas.

By: Mark in Paris : January 29th, 2017-06:18
I think that each one's experience will be different and it won't suit to everyobody. May be it will prepare for something else in the future Best, Mark

That's true. [nt]

 By: amanico : January 29th, 2017-06:46

Original Kari

 By: Watchobserver : February 3rd, 2017-16:25
I really loved this, one of the real novelties found at SIHH. ...

Thank you for the picture

By: Mark in Paris : February 8th, 2017-12:47
Must have been nice to play with it. Best, Mark

The dials are stunning but...

 By: mark1958a : February 8th, 2017-10:14
I think this would result in mistakes telling time .. will get confusing. .Just think if the guy next to you looks over your shoulder to see the time he will definitely get it wrong

I think it would need a little time indeed

By: Mark in Paris : February 8th, 2017-12:48
but maybe the philosophy will speak to some people and be nice to use on the long run. We'll see if an owner wishes to talk about it in the future! Best, Mark
