The “OTHER” NASA Moon Mission Timing Devices…

As we mark another anniversary of (arguably) Man’s greatest adventure, I thought it would be fitting to show this one.  It is often forgotten in the shadow of the Omega Speedmaster Professional and the other fine brands that made it into space in the early days.

For the Accutron, long before it went into space, it represented the future for a few reasons.

  • One of the very first commercial uses of the then-new transistor.
  • Perhaps the first commercially successful battery-operated wristwatch.
  • It established a new standard for manufacturing tolerances.  Read up on the “index wheel” used in the movement.

  • And to top it off, I feel that advanced the concept of accuracy for mass produced movements, while reducing the parts count dramatically.  The Accutron can be considered the father of the quartz watches of today.

And in the late 1800’s a Breguet family member envisioned a tuning fork regulated movement.

So here is my “Space View” model from 1970.  I get lot of comments and questions on this one everywhere I go, mostly from folks who never notice my other watches.

All the best to you and yours.

If you want something unique in the battery-powered genre, this is it. Quartz stuff leaves me me cold, although they do have their place (tools), like a good Bergeron set.

Over the years I've been tempted by these Accutrons but never succumbed.

Yours looks in great condition and splendid on your wrist especially with the grey strap. Now I'm tempted again. Regards Kev.

Thanks...

It was rough when I first got it 20 + years ago. A trip to an Accuton spa did it good. I had to order that strap to match the chapter ring from the UK.

I have two Accutron Bulova Astronaut in my collection.

Wow, those are some nice ones. I'd like to come up with an Astronaut some day. Tell me, how long do you get from a battery? It's about 13 months on mine. I just pop in a new one each new years.

Love this watch....
