Lange & Sohne Sports Model...

If Patek has the Nautilus and the Aquanaut, Audemars Piguet their Royal Oak, and Vacheron their Overseas isn't it high time Lange come out with their own Sports Luxury design?

I know I would be very interested to see a watch like that.

What would be a good name for it? Maybe The Ferdinand 1A?

How would it look? I would appreciate it if the more talented from our Purists would submit their designs or drawings of how it should look like.

I can't even imagine it, Lange design great watches though and the Richemont group have plenty of available R&D. It could be good!

I agree, it could be really something...

with that robust German engineering and construction, a very cool watch. However coming up with a completely unique design DNA such as the Nautillus or Royal Oak is going to require some genius.

They did...

Dato on Platinum bracelet. And it was awesome. Cheers, Brandon

In my opinion, there's a "big problem" that Lange must take into consideration if they want to launch a sporty timepiece

 By: Alkiro1 : July 18th, 2017-07:14
They don't use steel (only very few Lange 1 were made of steel). Only precious metals. And, for me, a sporty watch is mainly a steel watch (AP RO, Nautilus/Aquanaut, VC Overseas...). Best wishes Alkiro

Could you not argue, however...

That before the AP RO and PP Nautilus, those firms didn't do much by way of steel watches either? Best E.

Yes, but that was then, this is now – things have moved on far too much in 45 years.

Besides, even if Richemont gave AL&S the green light to make a competing product to the Overseas (which it would be), there’s the logistical problem of production capacity to overcome, so potential demand would outstrip potential supply. The nearest AL&S ...

Agreed

Excellent post.

You make excellent points, however there are many which are suffering from Royal Oak and Nautilus fatigue......

 By: SALMANPK : July 18th, 2017-22:30
and are searching for viable alternatives which are rarer and just as well made if not better. If Lange came out with a Sports design, I think it will be very well received regardless of the price point. And Lange as a brand and quality manufacturer in my...

I will agree with that...

 By: Esharp : July 19th, 2017-16:37
I am in the market for something akin to a RO or Nauti and for some reason cannot quite commit to the Overseas...the idea of a Lange model in this vein is very appealing to me, even if I can see that the brand DNA is unlikely to support such a piece. Best...

As PJS said, it was 45 years ago and the Horology industry is really different today.

 By: Alkiro1 : July 18th, 2017-08:17
There's a huge gap too between the number of timepieces made by Lange annually (few thousands) and Patek, AP or VC (several ten thousands). It something which has to be taken in consideration. May be Lange can increase its production but how clients of th...

Moser & Cie did it with their Pioneer.

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : July 18th, 2017-09:45
Does anyone know how it is selling? Haven't seen it here so I guess no Purist has one?

Love the Pioneer…until you see the thing is 15mm thick!! Why, for the love of God, did they think putting a domed crystal on a sporty watch was the sensible thing to do?

 By: anonymous09 : July 18th, 2017-10:55
DLC’d Titanium too – why? Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory springs to mind, even if the steel version does get rid of at least one of those two issues.

Lange has a history of pilot watches, why not a high end pilot?

Like PP is doing?

Do they? Wasn’t aware of that. Certainly has more scope, but again may come down to the fact they can’t make a steel version cheap enough.

Then again, aside from movement decoration/finishing, what would AL&S’s differentiator be? We can see what Patek has done with the 5522 compared to Zenith’s offering a couple of years previous – polished metal surrounds on the lumed numerals.

Clearly no

They don't want to open Pandora's box. Fx

Lange, in 2016, dropped production from over 6000 watches to around 5200.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 18th, 2017-11:28
So they should have the capacity to go up a 1000 or so if they wanted to "mass" produce a sports watch. But they have never shown interest in such a thing. The pilot they made was done at the "request" of the German government then in power. Again, it was...

Right, there's some problematic history, to say the least

And the good points about the economic prospects. I mentioned a sports watch to the N.American head of ALS as a way to interest Americans in the brand. They are super into keeping their brand DNA, as they should be. So, likely not a thing that will happen...

So far it has been.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 18th, 2017-15:28
Their current design cues, even something as offbeat as the Lange 1, are taken from their past pocket watch designs. Or from something iconic such as the Semper Oper building in Dresden. This could change in the future, but there are presently no plans to...

A few years ago, when Lange interviewed me about my "consumer preferences," I mentioned a sports watch.

 By: mkvc : July 18th, 2017-16:56
They didn't even pretend it could be a possibility. Not their thing. While I would prefer it to be otherwise, I can't really say they are wrong.

I think it would look like this.

 By: Alex83 : July 18th, 2017-15:06
... For me this one is the epitome of sport luxury, although I know it is mostly seen as a dress watch, for me too strong, bold and heavy to go with suit. My favourite watch as well. ...

I do think that, at least for now, you are right.

This is their sports watch.

Just an amazing design and watch from ALS...

 By: SALMANPK : July 18th, 2017-16:04
Definitely one of my favorites but hope to see something like the Royal Oak and Offshore equivalent from ALS. But I see the point that they want to remain traditional and inspired by their past. My issue with that is will they be able to attract younger b...

You make a good point.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 18th, 2017-16:22
So far this hasn't been a problem for Lange, but it could become one. I guess that they are hoping other brands will do the work of luring in the young and then they will grab the ones who become like us!

Fascinating thread Salman...

I may be one of the very few who hopes they do not go into the Steel sports watch market, as I believe it isn't what A. Lange & Sohne stand for in high end mechanical watchmaking. I'm actually very happy they haven't tried to be like all the other "Bl...

As always Tim you make excellent points so eloquently.

and as you say " I personally favor ALS over PP, VC & AP because of this commitment to exclusivity and technical & aesthetic brilliance that lovers of traditional high end watchmaking value and yearn for." for precisely these very reasons I would like to ...

I think it's lazy over-reaching to have a brand that you exploit in all corners, despite it being so common in all sectors. I think long term brand equity is better developed by being precise and targeted. The trick is to keep the Brand ID and take the pr...
