Experiences with magnetism and modern watches

Jul 20, 2017,22:07 PM

Team,

Some of you may have noticed that I particularly enjoy watches with antimagnetic shielding. I'm not sure why, I just like it! However, I own four watches (and I've sold 4 + 1 with a soft iron inner case) without any extra anti magnetic protection, and I've never had an issue with a watch being magnetised. My current collection which are all pretty much keepers have modern movements with reasonably anti magnetic components. During the course of my work and free time I simply avoid placing the watch directly near a magnet which I would do anyway even with a soft iron case. Does anyone else have a similar experience? Do we think it is necessary to have an Omega Co-axial or a Milguass for example to be confident in every day life? Or is resistance to 4,800 gauss as per the ISO and DIN standard sufficient?

I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Last night I was continuing to struggle over two watches for my next purchase, one is shielded and one is not. I began to wonder, does it actually matter?

I've never had a problem with ordinary watches getting magnitized.

I think shielded watches are useful for people who are exposed to strong magnetic fields. Of course if the novelty appeals to you there's nothing wrong with that. Best, Martin

Yes these were my thoughts

Have a look at my comment below and see what you think. I will likely be driving trains soon!

You raised a fair question...

Personally I think it is a novelty to have anti-magnetic up to 15,000gauss. Like you, I am careful of where I place my watch when taking it off from my wrist. It is the most unlikely places where a watch can get magnetised - e.g. my pen case (with a magne...

Yes you're right

Have a look at my response below and see what you think. Thank you for the input!

Well my watchmaker gave the following advices and here is a recap

Never wear a watch too close to a magnetic field (computers, tv and home applianceswhich are sources of magnetism) Never put your cell phone too close to your watch When you are doing electricity work whether on a car or in a facility , get the watch off ...

Yes of course, that was my impressions as well

I work around computers, phone etc a lot and it doesn't seem to do anything. I'm will (most likely) be starting a new job soon, driving trains! I wonder if the console and instruments etc in the cabin will magnetise my watches through repeated exposure, o...

Since basically all modern watches are "antmagnetic" enough for modern everyday life...

I would not worry too much! As already mentioned, de-magnetise is easy done and most often for free... Personally I think the Anitmagnetic theme is much more interesting and useful in todays lifestyle when it comes to vintage watches! Best Blomman

Interesting post and comments.

I have a question for any of the contributors. How do you know if your watch has been magnetised i.e. what are the symptoms? Regards Kev.

it is easy to notice for me on vintage watches especially on my vintage jlcs which are less antimagnetic than my other vintage watches

For instance wearing them to close to the computer or electronic devices or near the cell phone could affect their accuracy. My 1951 powermatic went from +1 to +10 sec per day in less than a week after being exposed to home appliances. Never had this with...

Thanks for your reply.

I seem never to have had a problem, although I have to say I'm not too worried about great accuracy with my vintage watches and perhaps I've just been lucky. Thanks again for your kind reply. Regards Kev.

No need to have a 15 000 Gauss watch. I have a 600 Gauss Geophysic, and no issues.

BUT there are many watches which got magnetized. I often have to go through security controls ( jails / courts of justice / airports... ), my lab top is always with me as well as my cell phone. BUT it is an easy thing to solve. I even have a tool to de ma...

Thanks for all you input guys

In conclusion, it appears to me that we're all having a similar experience. Modern watches seem to be fine except when exposed to abnormal magnetic fields, such as some serious security measures!

Rare

for a modern watch to become magnetized is my view. If you are near a magneto or some other strong magnetic field use common sense. Anti-magnetic watches came about due the strong magnetic fields found in aircraft cockpits years ago. Whether the new instr...

This was also my impression

It doesn't seem to me that normals use is too much of an issue or we'd all be degaussing every day! Thanks for your input

The only time I had a modern watch get magnetised was due to a magnetic clip on an iPad cover.

I threw the cover straight in the bin after that!
