What if: Chopard and Porsche Motorsport started their co-operation a little bit earlier?

The year I have in mind is 1971, actually - the last year prior to the turbo era, with a very interesting 'unique' racecar - the 917/20.

Being on holidays gives me some more time for horological musings, while being largely bedridden (flu of sorts) reduces my radius of operations more or less to the flat. So one makes do and the result of one of the days is best portrayed in the image below:

Now let me explain. The 1970s were definitely a heyday of both endurance racing and of Porsche at LeMans. And few 917s were as 'memorable' as the 917/20 'Sau'. A hybrid between the long and short 917s, with an extra wide body developed in France, it performed excellently, winning the pre-race. Sadly it dropped out of the race proper but it still progressed to semi-legendary status. I guess the paint scheme has more to do with it than the number 23 but who knows wink

Where does Chopard come into this? I know it's stretching things beyond breaking point but I felt my LUC Chrono One would have fit right in. Sports chronographs have been much more subdued / classical looking back in the day so it's not completely outrageous. 1971 would even have been fine in terms of an automatic chronograph. smile

In any case, were Chopard ever to add a LeMans Historique line next to the GPMH, something along these lines would work very well.

Or maybe it's the fever and it's high time for me to get well again wink

Did not know the lack of sponsorship part. But it was certainly wider than the other 917s, so I see where the opinion could come from

A Porsche Design piggy bank, actually ;)
