My CHOPARD biscuit trail continues to the Source

Sep 24, 2016,02:36 AM

My bourbon biscuit quest continues and today, we reach the one that started L.U.C off...

In 1996, ASP-94 prototype was realised and the first L.U.C 1.96 movement was launched in 1997 encased in the reference 16/1860/1.
Twenty years later, it is the icon that we find resplendent before us...

The giant biscuit obfuscates the small case size of those days.
Do you think 37mm diameter is too small?
My wrist size has not increased in twenty years but watches around me average out at 43mm diameter today.

Regards,
MTF

It's kinda perfect

The case size is absolutely appropriate for this watch. The dauphine hands are lovely and matched perfectly to the hour markers. The guilloche dial is beautiful. I especially love the cartouche around the Chopard name in script; I'm not a fan of the text ...

Mine came back from the Fleurier watch spa last year

It had not been worn for some time but came out to a Chopard dinner in London. The Chopard GB managing director spotted that the winding rotor was a little sluggish so he confisticated it and sent it home. It came back all pretty Regards, MTF

I find the 37mm size as perfect today as ever :)

In fact I hope Chopard starts offering smaller sizes again. Great watch and getting more and more curious about those biscuits of yours

My feeling is L.U.C watches will be at 40 - 42mm and Classic Racing watches above 42mm

The current "sweet spot" for the market segments are 40 - 42mm for elegance and above 42mm for the sportive lines. For those who wanted bigger and also as a nod to vintage dashboard instruments, they brought out the 46mm Mille Miglia Chrono XL 2016 Race E...

That’s lovely…I can just imagine it softened a bit, after dunking into a nice cup of tea.

The watch ain’t bad either, but 37mm won’t fly on these wrists. A larger diameter isn’t really the problem, it’s the lug lengths – many of you with slim wrists could easily upsize if the manufacturers bothered to shorten the lugs or angled them down more,...

Generally Chopard is quite adept...

At making lugs that will allow slender wristed people to wear their watches well Still, a slow return to smaller sizes would not go amiss.

Chopard did not really go big for men but strangely the big demand was from ladies

 By: MTF : September 24th, 2016-09:59
Chopard watches went bigger to accomodate more complications and legibility. However, they did not chase the Big fad like Panerai and Audemars Piguet. Strangely, the ladies like larger Chopard XL watches as fashion statements with "real estate" potential ...

The brands you cite don't support your statement.

I'm fairly certain the Royal Oak Offshore launched long before the "Big fad", and Panerai watches are historically large.

Quod erat demonstratum

Audemars Piguet T3 Case dimensions - 15.65mm thick x 61mm total length x 57.2mm wide . Panera PAM341 Radiomir Egiziano 60mm wide Chasing the Stars..... ...

LOL. Seriously Mel? That is your reply?

2 Limited Editions made for very specific reasons? The Panerai being faithful to its original size as a dive tool? PS, to make you feel better, I had to google your title. I wish I were as smart as you.

There is a PuristS watch with moving lugs.....

 By: MTF : September 24th, 2016-08:57
For the PuristS' 10th anniversary, BVLGARI produced a X-Pro P10 Edition. The lugs hinged AND rotated in two separate movements on each lug. Despite the large case size, the lugs allows perfect fit and comfort for a wide range of wrist sizes. Bulgari X-Pro...

37 mm isn't too small, provided I wear it under a long-sleeve shirt cuff.

On a bare arm, or with sleeves rolled up, it is a bit too small. 38.5 mm would be a better all-around size. So I wear a 37 mm dress watch usually only with long sleeve shirts. Lovely Chopard you have there. A great synthesis of modern and classic styling....

L.U.C watches probably never to be 37mm diameter again

 By: MTF : September 24th, 2016-09:42
When it was a simple time-only watch line, the size may have been fine. As more complications were developed, more case volume was needed. Chronographs and Perpetual Calendars need more dial area for displays and striking grand complications need the air ...

Hopefully Chopard doesn't go too far to the other side of 40 mm for the dressier pieces.

Time only, or time and date, would be nice on the underside of 40 mm...

Well...

A dress watch is supposed to be worn with long sleeves, so no issue there

Granted :) [nt]
