Hi All, finally I got this post up. Please provide your thoughts on the matter below.

Previously I was uncertain when some PuristS and friends thought that the design of the Chopard "Jungle" was inspired by "The Dream" , a painting by Henri Rousseau.

Now after studying the painting, IMO there is proof that the motif is inspired by this famous painting housed in MOMA in New York City.

My previous posts below:

Although the looks of the Lion was not conclusive, the leaves next to the Chopard Lion look like the same type as the ones in the painting right below the Rousseau Lion.

Furthermore, there were two places in the painting that had monkeys hanging from trees.

Based on the comparison photos, do you think that the Chopard Jungle was inspired by "The Dream" ?

Cheers,

Gordon

Frontal pose of lion and green leaves are the same as below

From the painting - check out the leaves

Hi Gordon!

Although not exactly the same which would have been impossible, I can see the similarities. Of course, the question would be best answered by someone from Chopard!

Hi Sham, thanks for your answer and comments ! If it replies with a "yes", would Chopard have to...

pay royalties to the owner of the painting ? LOL ! Cheers, Gordon

I doubt so Gordon :-)

since it is not an exact replica. Chopard would be too smart I believe to be caught in that position.

Nobody to ask at Chopard on vacation Regards MTF

I honestly don't see any similarities, other then the jungle setting

The mouths of the lions are totally different, I one pointy one angular. Even the monkeys look like different species! Sorry. The flavour is quite similar, taken in totally of painting. Not the individual animals. I expect to see lions in the jungle, just...

Hi Horo, thanks for your honest feedback !

For me, it was the leaves that got me thinking about the linkage between Chopard and the "Dream". It is good to hear yours and others' interpretation of the "evidence". Cheers, Gordon

Hi Alkiro, thank you for your assessment of this situation.

Definitely no plagiarism here ! If anything, only tribute and inspiration. Cheers, Gordon

Inspiration could be the right word Gordon

There are only so many ways to draw a leaf... The master design painting would have been by a western dial designer. Then, the Japanese urushi artist at Yamada Heian-do would have copied it onto lacquer art. The style is not Japanese unlike many of the ot...

Hi MTF, thanks for reminding me about the eco-system not being correct for the Chopard !

 By: GLau : August 12th, 2017-18:04
The eco-system for "The Dream" is also incorrect. Perhaps the European dial designer did get inspired by Rousseau ?? After summer it would be great if you could ask Chopard. Cheers, Gordon

LoL

The eco system issue really made my day , but hey, this is no National Geographic channel and leopards can indeed have diamonds paved onto them ha ha ha But seriously tho, I attended their launch party for the 'urushi' line some years ago and I must say i...

Japanese / Asian focused ! IMO, the only motif I love is the Jungle, irrespective of the actual eco-system! Cheers, Gordon

Very interesting post and question..

I'm not an expert on art pieces but I did some read up on Rousseau's painting. I think the influence in the Patek piece u had was q immediate. This piece, not so. If you look at the dial from far n the Rousseau painting from far, I feel that the feel of b...

Thanks traineract for your comments !

Given both "The Dream" and this Chopard Jungle have incorrect eco-system, this observation IMO is another piece of evidence to support the theory of the Jungle being inspired by Rousseau! Cheers, Gordon
