Ethics at the heart of beauty: Chopard now uses responsibly mined emeralds.

Responsibly sourced emeralds from Gemfields mines now adorn Chopard creations such as a watch, a pair of earrings and a ring in ethical 18-carat Fairmined white gold.

First Comes Gold

Fairmined Gold

Chopard began TheJourney to Sustainable Luxury in 2013 with the goal to position Chopard as market leaders for sustainable luxury in the watchmaking / jewellery sector.

Chopard worked alongside Eco-Age, the sustainable brand consultancy and its creative director Livia Firth, to promote ethics in the fashion world through the Green Carpet Challenge (GCC).

An early goal was the adoption of Fairmined gold for select watch and jewellery collections.  Fairmined gold comes from mining communities in South America supported by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM).

Next, Chopard turned its attention to ethical sourcing of diamonds and opals.

Palme d'Or Trophy Fairmined Gold

In 2014, Chopard enriched its Green Carpet Collection with jewellery set in diamonds from Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) certified IGC group mines, featuring a design inspired by the Palme d'Or trophy that the Chopard has designed and crafted for the Cannes Film Festival over two decades.

Recently, the trophy has been made out of Fairmined gold.

Ethical Emeralds

Then, in 2016, Chopard revealed the next step on its Journey when it started using responsibly mined emeralds in its Green Carpet Collection of High Jewellery. By a unique strategic partnership forged with Gemfields, the world leader in the extraction of coloured gemstones, Chopard is further along the 'Journey to Sustainable Luxury'.

New creations in the Green Carpet Collections will be decorated with responsibly mined Zambian emeralds from the Gemfields Kagem mine.  This is a first for the industry with coloured gemstones.

Zambian emeralds range in colour from bright green with yellowish tints to a vibrant green with bluish hues. It is almost impossible to find a clean emerald. Almost all contain inclusions that are visible even to the naked eye. Emerald is a relatively hard gemstone at almost 8 on the Mohs scale but is also brittle. These features make it difficult to work with.

2017 Chopard Green Carpet Collection

The 2017 Chopard Green Carpet Collection consists of a Fairmined white gold ring with marquise-cut emerald, earrings and a timepiece with marquise-cut emerald as well as brilliant-cut diamonds and emeralds.

We'll see more of the Collection at the next Cannes Film Festival in May 2017....
