Breguet: A misconception on my part?

Jun 10, 2017,21:45 PM

Greetings,

I feel fortunate having just discovered this forum last night.  In the effort to insure proper behavior on my behalf, I was sure to read all of the information on site etiquette.  I didn't see any membership time requirements for starting a new thread, so I hope I haven't misstepped...if so please forgive me.

To say that Ive had a love affair with Breguet for 20 years wouldn't quite be accurate, as Ive never been disappointed, frustrated, or enraged by my object of desire; and I must confess that it has been a love from afar with few exceptions.  Perhaps there is a bit more truth to my analogy as the question that Id like to ask could be construed as jealousy.  Id like to put forth to those with far greater knowledge on collecting timepieces, this wonderful little passion of ours, a question dealing with Breguet's position in the world of watchmaking today.  I get the feeling, at least in the USA, that Breguet gets ignored a bit...whether it be its exclusion in the supposed "Holy Trinity", or in the forums where Lange seems to assume the mantle of Patek's great competitor, or the laughable insinuations that derive from the Swatchgroup acquisition.  My collector friend says that while the Breguet complications are equal to that of PP & ALS, the brand as a whole is not because you can own a Breguet for far less than 20K so its not as exclusive...and of course he owns a Type XX!  Am I wrong to find this laughable, for the history of the timepieces he is referring to inherently has to be more affordable if they were to have the honor of being the French Military's choice in 1954!!  Does the MacBook Air, which bears virtually no relationship to the MacBook Pro, lessen the Apple brand?

Ive read previous posts where classique models were compared with Lange, with a sales rep calling the later "vastly superior".  I also read a thread that almost perfectly encapsulates my belief...".Patek is a business decision, Lange is wonderful but has no soul, and Vacheron is amazing but just missing that little something", in his opinion.  I always thought that the objective view was that Patek, Breguet, and Vacheron where at the very top of a very small but crowed list when it comes to complexity, craftsmanship, and luxury (I hate that word used for timepieces and prefer the word 'artistry')  When I first learned about timepieces 20 or so years ago, Lange was just getting rebooted, so I don't know them as well as the others.  So my belief was and still is that Breguet is Patek's great and most natural competitor.  And forgive me if I make this sound like a kindergarten competition, there is something to love about all timepieces of this caliber, but I have been only able to own Breguet and Patek. I apologize for my verbosity as I am easily carried away.   I would be so grateful to hear the opinions of those more knowledgable than I in the hopes of being enlightened.

Mike

and very evident in your words. The world of handcrafted watches most of us agree is absurd, riducuous and indulgent, but who cares? That's why like minded enthusiasts find a safe haven here not to be judged. At the level of finishing and craftsmanship of...

Is that it is difficult to unilaterally categorize which brands have the best finishing as not all brands finish every piece with the same level of details so standards do vary even within the same brand. And on top of the mentioned larger manufactures, t...

I completely agree, and not just cos I enjoy Japanese, Italian and Chinese cuisine :-)

And Lange and GS and PP and others (though not Breguet yet) What I enjoy is the respectful exchange of opinions and the gentlemanly agreement to disagree amongst members here in this forum. A good place to speak, and also to listen, and most of all, to le...

You can compare single watches, not the whole maison

I partially agree with gcTIME because i believe the main purpose for a forum is to assess and criticize every watch trough objective technical criterias. Unfortunately our judgement is biased by our possession, so you will always find opposite point of vi...

Welcome to the forum Mike!

and thank you for your thought provoking post. I think we can safely say that the holy trinity is a thing of the past and there is no way AP can now compete with Vacheron let alone Patek. In my opinion, Patek has no true rivals among the larger companies....

Thanks for the inspiration

I had forgotten to attach the photos I said I would of the ultra thin split second chronograph and the finish on the entry level Patek Calatrava. The amazing 33.2mm split second chronograph. Lange do one 10mm wider!! the finish on a basic Calatrava And an...

While I can't confirm this, the folks at the NYC Breguet Boutique tell me that Breguet will service any watch ever made by Breguet. I can say I wrote them about a not-too-old but out-of-production gold bracelet I wanted serviced and they were very patient...

That is great to know Spangles!

I know the London boutique would not do it though, so credit to the NYC boutique although I would have thought that there should be a standard policy among all the boutiques. I have no idea how many Breguet watches have been produced since Abraham Louis s...

Yeah, I emailed some higher-ups at Breguet about it

First one would have to source an original Breguet pocket watch is not an easy task as there were so many imitations in the 19th century!

I have faith in you! [nt]

I think the great posts more knowledgeable folks have made are a testament to why this site is such a pleasure to visit. As several have said, follow your heart. For me, you can really see how much the late Nicolas Hayek, head of Swatch, really made resto...
