Thank you, Georges, great read; made me nostalgic. You also confirmed my point...

Rushing out for a 630a drive group meet up, will try to revisit this in more detail later, but in brief -

1. Yes, earlier drivetrain (engine and transmission) lubrication sharing was not ideal. Not really a practical problem during most normal driving, but problematic during hard driving (which of course is what the Miura was supposedly designed for) so agreed, a flawed design for (manufacture intended) use. This was corrected during production life of the model.

But by the same token, many Porsches, as well engineered as they are overall, suffered from oil starvation issues ex factory.

Does this make them "mechanically unreliable?"

2. Original fuel delivery system design which had a more than acceptable industry typical chance of starting a fire during normal use - agreed, this was a problem.

But like self grenading Porsche M96 and M97 engines, the actual statistics were less than broad sweeping statements cum accepted conventional truths about the situation would leave one to believe.

3. Weber carburators - what's your point? Webers were legendary for many things, including their ubiquity in nearly all high performance cars of the era, including Ferrari and pure racing cars run in F1 and LeMans. To use this as a reason to call the Miura "mechanically unreliable" is again questionable, unless placed in the context that most if not all period high performance cars were "mechanically unreliable"

4. You slag Miuras for being rust buckets yet in an immediate followup you laud the Ghibli and Merak (for example) - doesnt this show personal bias against Lamborghini and / or for Maserati? When same period Maseratis were at least as rust prone as the Lambos?

Same factual qualities used to either support a slam or ignored when you like the car otherwise=intellectually dubious...

My point here is, opinions are fine - "I dont like Lamborghini or the Miura" but blanket generalizations that sound factual which likely will lead less experienced readers to (unfair) conclusions are ... subject to being called out.

Thank you for taking the time to address the specifics, obviously you are knowledgeable about automobiles, chapeau. Now casual readers can decide for themselves whether they agree or not with the sweeping statements...

I am curious how many of these cars you have owned or driven? (Sincere question, not a challenge) - your knowledge is impressive.

By the way, fine tuning the butterflies on DCNF or DCOE carbs is a cool black art...colin chapman's comments notwithstanding...πŸ˜‰

Cheers,

TM

Some days I am truly inspired, but today should not be one, given the news I got that my (I would you an adjective here, but...) salary won't rise.

Damn Portuguese corrector!

Lambos, especially early Lambos, definitely had their flaws...

 By: ThomasM : September 30th, 2017-06:59
And those of us who appreciate and love them do so despite those flaws. Same with Ferraris, Alfas, MOPAR Ford and Chevy and even (gasp) MB BMW and dont get me started on period Audis... American muscle cars from the 60's and 70's couldn't take curves wort...

Don't get me wrong I do like some italian cars such as the 365 gtb4, the 512BB, the maserati ghibli, the maserati merak and of course the bizzarini 5300 which were some of the finest italian cars of the era

On Miuras, the multiple carburettors (generally 4 WBER IDL40 3bbl Carburetors) needed regularly fine tuning but also the design of the fuel supply was however imperfect, the car being known for a fire hazard of the engine compartment,

1) Yes on that we agree. For me what makes something unreliable is the fact that you have to baby it and overtake care of it and because it isn't made to be used in normal or harsh conditions or that it is prone to malfunction after a few months of use. 2...
