Colors are A'Changing

We talk a lot about colors of our dials and straps here - thus I thought it might be instructive to hear what a paint color expert thinks about the newest car colors. Here are some excerpts from a report in today’s Automotive News:

Jane Harrington manages color styling for PPG Industries’ automotive OEM coatings. In addition to supplying paint, PPG monitors automotive color trends.

Harrington said blue is the fastest-growing color for vehicles globally.

Could that be true of the watch world too? I will compare some dials with some new cars.

Audi and BMW had standout blue colors while Ford, Volkswagen and Subaru also displayed various new blues.

2018 GS dial

“We now see a slightly greener shade, where it might be more of a tourmaline, but also red-shaded blues."

Green appears to be making a comeback after 20 years decline.

“The Mustang Bullitt has a new Highland Green,

and the Mercedes G class had a beautiful dark, rich green. It was very lush, very sporty looking."

"Brown is evolving into copper colors."

The 2019 Ford Ranger

The Lexus LF-1 concept had a beautiful color between rose gold and copper that was just very elegant.

Red also continues to evolve," she said.  "Acura RDX has a red that almost glows."

Ditto for Seiko.

Neutral colors (white, black, silver and gray) came in a variety of looks; some melding into each other. For example, silvery-white on the Infiniti Q Inspiration

A vehicle's color may affect new technologies. Light colors pose no problem for autonomous cars, but dark colors may absorb lidar instead of reflecting it. PPG is developing reflective darker colors to enhance lidar detection.

It's an interesting comparison. Many thanks to the PuristS whose photos I borrowed.
