This car is unfairly judged.

It had the bad fortune of being planned during 1980s boom times and then launched into a global slowdown. Also, the production XJ220 has been critiqued unfairly on the basis of not featuring the all-wheel-drive, active aerodynamics, and V12 engine of the concept car. But the result with the Group B twin-turbo V6 was world-beating performance in the most stunning supercar bodywork since the Miura.

Honestly, the car appears more impressive and relevant in retrospect. There's nothing dated about its appearance, and other supercars from the 1970s and 1980s (e.g., Countach, Jalpa, Testarossa, Isdera Imperator, Ciezeta Moroder, and even the Ferrari F40) look their age. Any member of the general public can accurately gauge the age of those other machines, but the XJ220 and Porsche 959 still look fresh today. Moreover, the twin-turbo V6 supercar lives in the modern day LeMans-winning Ford GT, so even the power concept has aged well.

Best,
Tim

A brilliantly flawed and misunderstood Supercar from the 1990's

 By: ThomasM : January 29th, 2018-08:19
I was fortunate enough to see this over the weekend and spend a little quality time with the car. She's big - 17' long and nearly 7' wide - with fully manual steering. She is powered by a basically detuned full blown Group B Rally motor - rough, loud, roa...

Beautiful car ....

....and the SLS is not too shabby either! Best, John.

Both are glorious to behold...

Thanks, John

I have a friend considering this car

 By: dedestexhes : January 29th, 2018-08:33
but he has very big worries about the serviceability of that engine. Any ideas about that? After how many miles etc? Even if a bit detuned it still is a kind of almost one off engine. Great car by the way, only saw it once on the road. Thx for sharing, Di...

Once it is sorted out, and reconditioned if sitting for a long time,

It is actually not too bad, according to several owners and mechanics I have spoken to. If your friend is serious, find the best one he can find, spend the money to bring all parts up to operating condition, and he will have an ownership experience few ot...

I really like that XJ220 πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ˜˜

I Think its underatted . Dont know how it dives but to look at it , its a stunner imo

It is a stunning car to look at, and the more you understand it the more

You respect it, the naysayers be damned It drives like a truck at low speeds but once into its element - above 3000 rpm and over 80mph, it gets better and better...

Thanks for the offer πŸ™πŸ»πŸ€—

Its a bit to far away i guess πŸ˜‰ (holland)

I’ve always felt this Jag has a special place in automotive history.

Like the Vector, it was avante garde but a victim of the technology of the Times. Both spearheaded automotive design and laid the foundation for today’s HyperCars. Love the comment about how it has curves where others have lines. Never has there been a mo...

It sure is refreshing to see beautiful babes like this enjoying with their owner what they're meant to do. Ive not had the pleasure to pilot this young dame πŸ˜€, but understand your description to be perfectly appropriate. I do hope you secured just a littl...

Thank you, you hit the nail on the head.

Timeless design. I have been a long time Jaguar fan and remember when this was introduced. I remember thinking that it was way ahead of its time. Thanks for sharing.

It was, got forgotten under a cloud of controversy, and finally

The XJ220 gave the Pagani Zonda... XJ220 FTW! 😁

This car is unfairly judged.

Well said, Tim. I look for timeless beauty, not POP for the moment

If the XJ220 were released as a 2019 concept car it would still look modern. Cheers, TM

WoW, what a beauty and rare color also...

I remember seeing a Silver XJ220 on a traffic light way back in 1997, it was stunning then and now. S

A glorious car indeed :)

And one that would still keep my interest in my current life segment, where supercars generally leave me relatively cold I would have loved to see and experience the XJR-15 version, too - with a NA V12 and less power but more rarity

The XJR15 is by most accounts past the bleeding edge

In the press it was taunted as the gentlemanβ€˜s version due to the classical V12 and its looks

Too bad the interior knobs come from a Ford Escort, but I guess they are period correct.

With much better haptics though...

I'd like to try the SLS!

The XJ220 is just an automotive legend. Might as well be an urban legend to me, as I probably can't get one due to costs and availability... I'd love to try an SLS. I always loved the Gullwing doors. It was made in a time when the economy was in a recessi...

But I think I know what you meant - to you, the XJ220 is so far beyond reality for you, it might as well be an urban myth (ie, doesnt and never really exist(ed) So what about the Dufour Sonnerie? Or Duality? Whereas the SLS, with a stretch, is possibly ac...

Yes, precisely.
