Vintage Constellation 168.004

 By: aroma : November 28th, 2010-03:11

Hi All,

I am slightly confused (but that's not unusual) by the 1960s Constellation model 168.004.  I had thought that all these were the 'hidden crown' version but I have seen examples that show the crown and are referred to as 'non-hidden crown'.  Did the model 168.004 include both versions? and if so is there any way of distinguishing between the two versions from the case reference info?

Thanks in advance

On the official vintage...

I have looked up the official Omega database for vintage watches...

The information provided there clearly states "hidden crown" for the Ref. 168.004

kind regards

Hidden Crowns

Thanks Erich,

In Desmond Guilfoyle's excellent blogs on Constellations, in the essay called 'A Case Study', Desmond says "New styles featuring round cases with both hidden and non-hidden crowns came out in the date model 561 under the case number 168.004".  This implies to me that case ref 168.004 included both hidden and non-hidden crowns.  I'd love to see a non-hidden one.  I have two of these Constellations, one is a steel 168.004 with hidden crown and the other is an 18ct  'Dennison' cased example with a case ref 168.5004 (hopefully shown below)

You may...

Hi Aroma,

you may fully trust Desmond as he is a very well informed about Omegas and Constellations in special.

The Omega website provides a lot of info but is not always complete...

kind regards

The issue.. 'Dennison' cased example.. also how about a Pie pan dial example !

HI Aroma

A good part of the confusion is the  'Dennison' cased example.   The Omega.ch database is based on Fab Swiss   aka Swiss made cases...   Dennison cases made for the UK market could have strayed from the detail of the case... aka exposed crown.

Here is a Swiss made steel case...  36 mm with the rare Pie Pan dial in comparison to the other examples in this thread "convex" or camfored dial .

Good  Hunting...

Hidden Crown Constellations

Thanks for the info and photos - I have just taken one of the rear of my Dennison cased Constellation which shows the recess where the crown fits.  The crown is therefore semi-hidden and not non-hidden and my question is are all non-hidden crown Constellations like this photo or do they not have the recess.

Thanks again for any input

not sure if this pic...

Here is a 168.004

of mine with an original 'hidden crown'.  The crown was sightly visible and quite small.    I have seen examples with non-hidden crowns on 168.004s that were claimed to be original, hence that comment in the article, but the definitive non-hidden crown version was the 168.010.

In the flesh, the crown is almost imperceptible when the watch is worn.  These models look very speccy on a BOR bracelet.

Cheers

Desmond

And here's mine
